Below is a short introduction video that was recorded in 2025 during my first year at Tampere University.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mikael Laakso\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_mPimaidKy0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Since 2009 I have been researching the changing landscape towards openness in scholarly publishing by studying combinations of bibliometrics, web metrics, business models, science policy, and author behavior. I defended my <a href=\"https:\/\/helda.helsinki.fi\/handle\/10138\/45238\">PhD thesis<\/a> on the subject of Open Access journal publishing in 2014 from Hanken School of Economics. Please see the <a href=\"https:\/\/mikaellaakso.com\/?page_id=14\">publications section<\/a> of my webpage if you are interested in the research I\u00b4ve been doing.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to teaching, supervision, and research I see societal impact as very important part of my work, thus I frequently give public talks and am involved in various national and international groups. I have been involved in preparing reports for the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.europa.eu\/doi\/10.2777\/836532\">European Commission<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5281\/zenodo.7728016\">European Research Council Executive Agency (ERCEA)<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/dash.harvard.edu\/handle\/1\/27803834\">, Harvard Library Office of Scholarly Communication<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/urn.fi\/URN:NBN:fi-fe2021042720432\">Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.23847\/978-952-599516-9\">Finnish Association of Scholarly Publishers<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/harisportal.hanken.fi\/files\/28170257\/study_of_the_nordic_ssh_journal_publishing_landscape.pdf\">Nordic Publications Committee for Humanities and Social Science Periodicals (NOP-HS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding my current societal engagements I am a board member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informaatiotutkimus.fi\/?Yhdistys\">Finnish Association of Information Studies<\/a>, a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiwi.fi\/pages\/viewpage.action?pageId=41027142#expand-Jsenet20212024\">steering group of the FinELib national library consortium<\/a>, a\u00a0 member of the Ministry of Education and Culture appointed <a href=\"https:\/\/okm.fi\/en\/project?tunnus=OKM046:00\/2023\">Advisory board for intellectual property<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tjnk.fi\/en\/tjnk\/members\">Committee for Public Information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I am a member of the editorial board of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/jd\">Journal of Documentation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tidsskrift.dk\/njlis\">Nordic Journal of Library and Information Studies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuni.fi\/en\/library\/tampere-university-press\">Tampere University Press<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/septentrio.uit.no\/index.php\/nopos\">Nordic Perspectives on Open Science<\/a>.
